Grunge zine

Yubee Magazine

Yubee is not just a magazine but also a brand. My mission with Yubee is to use it as a tool to amplify individuality and celebrate self-expression. The concept behind the magazine is to highlight subcultures known for their self-expression. The articles study the subculture, analyze them, and relates them back to the mission statement of Yubee. This issue focuses on the 90's movement grunge.

I wanted to utilize as many of skills as I could in this project. I wrote all the articles, took the photos, made the illustrations, and created the magazine using primarily InDesign. With the intention of printing and selling this piece, I went through Blurb and followed their print guidelines for file preparation.

I started with research related to grunge and the time period ranging from music, fashion, typography, to printed materials such as zines and magazines. This gave me the framework I needed for not just the articles but for the general aesthetic the magazine would go for. I made sketches of concepts for ads, illustrations, photos, and the layout of the magazine.

For the illustrations, I took my concept art and brought them into Clip Studio Paint to create a high resolution asset that I would later pull into InDesign or photoshop depending on the complexity of the desired editing.

When taking the photos I used my sketch as reference which helped me frame my subjects. For example, for the Macy's Coffee shop ad I referenced my sketch for placement of the logo and arranged the coffee beans and mug accordingly.
